Natura 2000 Network

What is it

Natura 2000 is a European environmental network dealing with the preservation of biodiversity areas. This network is the main instrument for the preservation of nature in the European Union.

In Cantabria, the Natura 2000 network covers 8 Bird Special Protection Areas (BSPAs) with a total area of 79,110 ha, and 21 Sites of Community Importance (SCI) with a total area of 134,214 ha, respectively.

This network includes five coastal areas (“Rías Occidentales y Duna de Oyambre”, “Dunas de Liencres y Estuario del Pas”, “Dunas del Puntal y Estuario del Miera”, “Costa Central y Ría de Ajo” y “Marismas de Santoña, Victoria y Joyel”) and one BSPA (“Marismas de Santoña, Victoria, Joyel y Ría de Ajo”).
